Endangered Animals Polar Bears

The emission of green-house gases and excessive presence of carbon di-oxide in the atmosphere has caused global warming. This has resulted in the melting of glaciers, which has destroyed the natural habitat of animals living in the Polar Regions. Endangered animals polar bears have also been affected by this man-made disaster.

About Polar Bears

Polar bears have heavy white fur on their body, which insulates them from the extreme cold. They are swift runners, and usually cover hundreds of miles. Moreover, they are expert swimmers. They are found throughout the arctic region, and are the first animal to be categorized as endangered animals due to global warming. Their life span is about 25 years.

Diet of Polar Bears

A polar bear's diet generally consists of fish, seal, caribou, birds, seaweed, and grass. Sometimes they feed themselves on a whale, which has lost its way and come near to the shore.

Causes of endangerment of Polar bears

According to International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and Endangered Species Act (ESA), polar bears are not endangered animals, but they are threatened to become extinct. Habitat loss of the polar bears due to climate change is the major cause for their endangerment. Moreover, they are excessively hunted for their hides, which are priceless, meat, tendons, fat, and flesh. It is believed that only 20,000-25,000 polar bears are alive in the wilderness.

Oil extraction from the Arctic Ocean is yet another cause for the endangerment of polar bears. It spreads the toxic chemicals in the seawaters, and pollutes the surroundings. This makes it difficult for the endangered animals polar bears to hunt for their foods. Moreover, unregulated sport hunting from aircrafts has made polar bears endangered animals.

Conservation of polar bears

Polar bears are free roaming creatures, which makes a bit difficult to protect them. To check the decreasing numbers of polar bears, an international agreement was signed in 1973. This agreement allows the use of only traditional weapons for the hunting of polar bears.

Canada, United States, Norway, Denmark, and former USSR convened an International Agreement on the Conservation of Polar Bears and their habitat in 1973. It has restricted the hunting of polar bears. World Wildlife Federation (WWF) is a worldwide organization for the conservation of wildlife. It is a leader in the conservation of polar bears. It has started an adoption program to save the endangered animals.

The cumulative effect of man's progress has resulted in the endangerment of the planet earth. Destruction in the past happened due to ignorance. But, today, when we aware of its negative consequences, it is our responsibility to correct it. We have the capability and the responsibility to make changes because we will be responsible for what we deliver to our next generation.

Therefore, it is important to save the endangered animals polar bears, and conserve the wildlife. With our commitment and a little effort, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of endangered animals. Moreover, it is our moral duty to preserve our planet earth.
