Endangered Exotic Animals
The beauty of the planet earth is because of the magnificent creatures inhabiting it. It is home to several exotic species of animals. But, many of them are endangered due to habitat loss, pollution, deforestation, and other destructive activities of man. Here, we discuss about some endangered exotic animals:
Solenodon: They are mainly found in Cuba and Hispanola. They are like an over-sized hedgehog, which can inject rattle-snake like venom through their teeth. They are the only mammal to do so, and they get annoyed easily. They feed both on carrion and insects, and are vital to the ecosystem. They were thought to be extinct, but a few of them were found alive in 2003. They are considered critically endangered animals.
Olm: It is an unusual blind amphibian. It has a life-span of about 100 years, and can live without food for ten years at a stretch. It is found in the subterranean waters of Italy, Croatia, and Herzegovina. It has human-like skin, thus it is nicknamed as “human fish”.
Bumblebee Bat: It is one of the smallest bats, and measures about one inch. It hovers around like a hummingbird. It prefers to live in the caves, and feeds on insects. It is mainly found in Thailand. It is considered as one of the twelve most endangered species in the world, and fewer than 200 of them are believed to be alive.
Aye Aye: They rely on echolocation for hunting, and are the only primates of the mammal world to do so. They live in spherical nests, which have a small opening for entry and exit. They use their long, slender middle finger to tap on trees to find the insects. It is, probably, due to their unusually large eyes and ears that they are believed to be a demon, or an omen of bad luck.
Echidna: There are four species of them found in the world. It is one of the two egg-laying mammals in the world. This creature has a hedgehog-like appearance, and is shy and non-confrontational. It has a long, moist snout. It has no teeth, but uses its long tongue and the mouth cavity to feed on termites.
The Kiwi: It is a flightless bird with a violent and temperamental attitude. It is the only bird having whiskers. It has a highly developed smell-sense, and has dog-like ability to sniff out food and threats. It is difficult to detect the wings of the Kiwi as the loose, fluffy, hair-like feathers cover up their tiny wings.
In the same way, Angler fish, Kakapo, Hooded Seal, Weta, Mexican Walking fish, Giant Coconut Crab, Chinese Giant salamander, Glass frog, Hornbill, Blob fish, Dugong, Yellow-eyed Penguin, Duck-billed platypus, Monito Del Monte, Titi monkeys, Diana monkeys, Kinkajou, Great Green Macaws, Chinese box turtle, Seahorses, Lemurs, The Eurasian Vulture, White Bengal tigers, etc. are some of the other endangered exotic animals.
Therefore, conservation efforts on the part of government and the wildlife organizations have been initiated for the protection of these endangered creatures. But, still much has to be done to ensure the safety of all the endangered animals.
