Worms as a Recyclers
Mold and bacteria and higher level organisms like beetles, centipedes and, of course, earthworms are all busy recyclers. By breaking down organic matter stuff like dead plants, poop, and decaying animals they create valuable nutrients necessary for rich and fertile soil.
Without the help of worms, every plant and animal that died and fell to the ground would stay right where it fell. Trees, leaves, fruit, nuts, dead animals and food would just keep piling up.
Diet
But worms and other decomposers break down all this refuge. All those trees and leaves becomes rich soil for new seedlings to grow. And the cycle starts all over again.
Garbage human think it's Yucky, but worms love it! All those banana peels, egg shells and pizza crusts that you throw away are mighty tasty to worms.
Some people invite worms right into their home to eat their old food scraps. What a great idea. You get rid of your garbage, and worms get a daily feast.
You build us a little home called a worm bin by adding comfy bedding, worms, and food scraps to a container. Worms will eat the food scraps and turn them into compost. Compost makes a great, nutrient-rich soil that is perfect for growing plants.
