Sharks
Sharks! While the mention of this word instills feelings of fear and loathing in most people, it is something they also associate with tropical waters. Nothing could be further from the truth! Sharks are found right here in our own Bay of Fundy! While most people will spend their entire lives and not see one, they are here, swimming silently below the surface. A large shark however, the basking shark, is often seen slowly swimming at the surface with its huge dorsal fin riding high in the water. There are many other types of sharks found in our waters. Another shark frequently encountered is the porbeagle shark. To the untrained eye, this may be mistaken for a small Great White shark, which is also found in the Bay of Fundy. A large Great White was caught in the Bay several years ago and many have been sighted since then. What is likely the fastest swimming shark, the mako, is frequently found in our waters. These are only a few of the many species that are found in our waters. Sharks are magnificant animals which have been around for 400 million years!
