Description
The leatherback is the largest and most distinctive of all living turtle species, up to 1.8 m in length and 682 kg in weight. the front flippers are long and narrow. the trunk is deep and somewhat barrel-shaped with a posterior taper to a blunt point. the shell is covered with a distinctive rubbery skin instead of horny plates.
Threats To
Sometimes a turtle will mistake an inflated plastic bag for a jellyfish, their main food, and eat the bag. The bag blocks the digestive tract and kills the turtle. People dig up the eggs for food. Leatherbacks are also accidentally caught in fishing nets and are drowned.
