Habitat
Second only to humans in their adaption to climate extremes throughout the world, gray wolves were equally at home in the deserts of israel, the deciduous forests of virginia and the frozen arctic of siberia. Within the continental us, gray wolves once ranged from coast to coast and from canada to mexico.
Description
A carnivore related to the jackal and domestic dog, an adult measures up to 1.6 m in length, including the tail, and may weigh up to 80 kg. It is reddish-yellow or yellowish-grey, with black patches above and white below; those in the far north, however, may be pure white.
Threats To
Wolves became nearly extinct in the lower 48 states because farmers believed wolves caused widespread livestock losses. Constantly persecuted and targeted by large scale eradication programs, wolves have been pursued with more passion and determination than any other animal in u.s. history.
