Bottlenose DolphinTursiops truncatus

Habitat
All temperate to tropical oceans.
Description
With a body length of 4 m. and a weight of 650 kg, the bottlenose is one of the largest dolphins. The dorsal fin is high with a broad base and slightly hooked tip. The lower jaw projects beyond the upper jaw, leading to what some people consider a belligerent look. The teeth number 23-25 pairs per jaw and vary from sharp, sturdy, and conical in the young to worn down in mature specimens. The flippers are somewhat long, dark, and slender, with pointed tips and broad bases.
Threats To
Many become trapped then drown in tuna nets; between 1959 and 1972 an estimated 4.8 million dolphins died in this way.
