Animal Farm Information

A farm is a place where animals are bred. It is very important to keep the farm well maintained, as animals are prone to diseases, in bad conditions. The cubicles where they are kept should be spacious and clean. There should be a lot of open space on the farm for grazing-animals. Animals should not only be fed regularly, but also should be kept clean, with proper medical treatments. Animal farm information will help us know the things to do to maintain a farm in the best possible manner.

Here's a list of things that needs to be looked at to maintain a farm:

  1. Animal health and hygiene: Animals should be kept clean, in order keep them disease-free. Further, their shelters should be well maintained. Floors should be water proof, with good drainage system. Roofs and walls must be dust proof and easy to clean. There should be proper ventilation to provide clean air. Apart from this, there should be proper lights and good visibility to all milking and cleaning operations.

  2. Cubicles: Each cow should be kept in a separate cubicle. It should be spacious enough for the animal to lie down. It should have good bedding, for the animals comfort. Cubicles should also be well lit, if the cow is milked there. If the cows are kept in loose yards, it should be spacious enough to accommodate all the cows, leaving a few yards of extra space. In case of loose yards, daily bedding should be provided. Used beddings should be removed after four to six weeks.

  3. Animal feed: Animals should be fed on a regular basis. There should also be an adequate amount of water in their shelters, which needs to be changed periodically. If there is any change in their behavior or droppings, one can try altering the food patters. The food given should be suitable for human consumption.

  4. Cleanliness of animals and equipments: The utensils used for feeding animals, milking machines, and bulk tank should be well maintained. The animals, before milking, should also be cleaned to avoid bacteria or insects contaminating the milk. Milk should be tested before consumption or storage. If the milk test positive for tuberculosis or brucellosis, it should not be used for human consumption.

  5. Use of water for cleaning: Clean water should be used for cleaning animals, milk storage rooms and in the parlor. Animals can be washed with water containing suitable disinfectant. The water should be approved for bacteriological purity. To clean efficiently, one can also use chemicals, but we need to be sure about the correct strength of the chemicals, and the correct method of using it.

  6. Controlling pests, vermin and other insects: Adequate measures should be taken to control insects, rodents, and birds in the premises. Waste materials should be removed as soon as possible, in order to avoid flies and other pests. Fly screens should be fitted on the windows. All feed should be kept in closed containers. These insects can cause some diseases, therefore proper insecticides should be used to prevent these diseases. If animals are affected with these diseases, then proper medical treatment should be provided, apart from using insecticides.

These are a few things that need to be followed in order to maintain a farm. A clean and well-maintained farm brings prosperity and good will to the farm as well as the people who manage it.
